Manners for the Real World:
Basic Social Skills
FROM REVIEWS:...the ideal
vehicle...loved the humor...phenomenal...a must see for all students...a
great teaching tool...instructional objectives are clearly outlined and
amusingly met...easy to follow, interesting and helpful..
We produced this video to show students from upper elementary through
high school how to act during some of the most common interactions
between people. It features clear, straightforward demonstrations of
appropriate and inappropriate behavior -- and we added a dash of fun to
keep adolescent attention spans engaged.

The program covers: personal hygiene,
conversations, introductions, telephone and internet use, table manners,
behavior for ladies and gentlemen, manners in public, serving as a host
and being a guest. We devote a segment to each subject, so viewers can
watch one subject at a time, or play the entire video. While we think
just about any student will find it entertaining and helpful, the video
should be especially effective with young people who don't easily pick
up social skills by themselves, but need clear, specific examples of
appropriate manners and behaviors.
A little fun can go a long way in
helping your children add social skills to their overall life skills.
We call it "Manners for the Real
World," because we focus on basic social skills designed to help
children and teenagers interact comfortably with each other and adults
in day-to-day situations.
Because we're describing,
demonstrating and reviewing specific situations, the video is also
attuned to the way many children with social skill deficits need to
absorb information.
Click here to learn more about how this video can
be used in a program to help children with conditions such as Asperger
Syndrome and High Functioning Autism master basic social skills.
So if you want your children to be
comfortable and confident in dealing with people, this video can give
them concrete ways to help make that happen.

Our "MANNERS FOR THE
REAL WORLD - Basic Social Skills" video features
straightforward descriptions and clear
demonstrations of the right behaviors for common
social situations. This can make it a helpful tool
in teaching a child with Asperger Syndrome or High
Functioning Autism some extremely useful social
skills.
The creator's
son Drew, who has Asperger Syndrome, has always
learned best if we give him a clear understanding of
how we expect him to behave before he's in a
situation -- and lots of positive reinforcement when
he applies what he's learned. We divided this
Manners/Social Skills video into segments, so it's
easy to focus on one set of behaviors at a time. We
recommend letting your child view the entire tape,
then working with your child to repeatedly view and
practice to master one skill set at a time. If you
approach each skill set in manageable portions, you
can help your child build on each success. Younger
children routinely want to imitate older children,
so we feature teenagers of various ages in our
demonstrations to make them relevant for children
from upper elementary through senior high school.
We also include interactions between teenagers and
adults.
The creators
are
delighted each time they see our son properly greet
someone, make eye contact, and hold a conversation
without dominating it. hey hope this tape can help
your son or daughter develop important social skills
to interact comfortably with a variety of people. |

Intricate Minds:
Understanding
Classmates With Asperger Syndrome
FROM REVIEWS: "...an excellent introduction to
Asperger Syndrome...poignant...well
produced...fosters an understanding that is
unfortunately rare in today's world...unique,
intelligent and likable teens speak for
themselves...enlightening and compelling..."
from Fred R. Volkmar, Brenda Smith Myles, Jed E.
Baker and more.)

Candid
interviews with teenagers designed to promote
positive interactions between classmates and reduce
harassment and bullying.
Through interviews
with students who have Asperger Syndrome (AS), this
video offers an inside look at how teenagers with AS
act, think and feel -- and how they're routinely
treated. The students talk about their strengths as
well as their challenges and describe how important
is it to them to be treated with respect. The
program's open includes speculation that Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein
had Asperger Syndrome.
After viewing this
video, classmates should be less likely to ignore or
harass students with AS -- and be more willing to
treat them as equals.
The program is
designed for students in high school and middle
school and is an excellent staff development tool.

Asperger Syndrome:
Success in the Mainstream Classroom
This video
provides proven techniques and tips to help make
mainstreaming a child with Asperger Syndrome a
positive learning experience for him or her --
AND for teachers and classmates. Whether your
child's classroom has one teacher, or the
support of special education teachers and aides,
these approaches can help make the difference in
your child's education.
You'll see
interviews with psychologist Dr. Jed Baker,
parents, regular and special education teachers,
an instructional aide and a case manager/social
worker -- all describing specific steps that
have worked for them in guiding and teaching
children with AS in elementary through high
school classes.
You can think of this as "Asperger Syndrome
101." At 44 minutes, it's the perfect length to
view during an available class period (or to use
as a teacher in-service program) and it points
the way toward other resources to help generate
continued success.
Designed for
parents and school staff to give a basic
understanding of the dynamics of an Asperger's
child in the educational environment.
Ideal for in-service trainings or for parents to
give to their child's teacher.
