Captains Log

Captain's Log® DOS is the most widely used, comprehensive set of computerized cognitive training/testing program ever published. It has been in continuous use since 1985, and has a proven track record in a variety of therapeutic, school and home settings in all 50 states, US territories and 23 foreign countries. Coaches can use scores on these various units to key in on academic weaknesses and then utilize the training protocols to strengthen those skills. Older self motivated children can often move into independent study, thus reducing fees to equipment usage.

Our cognitive testing pinpoints barriers for learning. We sort the testing data three different ways by module, by educational skill and by cognitive task.
List of skills tested

We are under the belief that educational problems are seldom psychologically based. Undergoing huge batteries of tests (that are very costly) is unnecessary.
The following tests are skill based and can be completed in one appointment.
We searched for the best tools
that directly test the skills that need to be tested.

This saves you time and money-

The following Educational Tests are $50
each or 2/$75
Reports with suggested accommodations for the schools may be an extra charge.

Integrated Visual & Auditory
Continuous Performance Test

by Joseph A. Sandford, Ph.D. & Ann Turner, M.D.

IVA (Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test) is a comprehensive computerized test of attention, processing speed,  and self control used by health professionals in identifying and diagnosing attention related difficulties. In it's first use, it clarifies if there are related cognitive deficits associated with ADD/ADHD and provides data as to what treatment options will help. We can also use the IVA CPT test to monitor the effectiveness of medication as well as any treatment option. It is based solely on the performance of the individual rather than subjective forms of related information that are often just one persons opinion. Your interests as well as data from parents and instructors/supervisors will also help us in choosing and evaluating our treatment plan.

There is an additional  fee for the IVA Test

Auditory Evaluative Tools

The SCAN—C Test for Auditory Processing Disorders in Children–Revised enables professionals to obtain reliable central auditory test results in children between ages 5 years, 0 months and 11 years, 11 months. Scan-A is provided for those age 12 and above.

The test assesses the perception or pre-cognitive stage of auditory processing. The careful, thorough procedures utilized in developing and updating this test will allow you to identify children who have auditory processing disorders and who may benefit from intervention. The results are also useful in determining levels of auditory maturation and hemispheric dominance for language.

Scan-C should be used when children have normal hearing acuity but who appear to have poor listening skills, short auditory attention span, or difficulty understanding speech.

We also have the Auditory CPT, as well as, rhythm and tonal discrimination tests. We can use  our Sound Smart Auditory Discrimination Program to check phonemic discrimination with distractions, distortions in speech, background sounds, and changes in pitch.

DEST (Dyslexia Early Screening Test) is used with pupils aged 4 years 6 months to 6 years 5 months to provide a profile of strengths and weaknesses which can be used to guide the development of support. Traditionally, screenings for dyslexia have waited until the student has fallen behind or they can demonstrate a difference between IQ and reading ability. This delay is no longer necessary.  A recent study, which actually assessed the relative impairment, established that it was possible to provide a simple index by combining indications of difficulties in phonological skill, balance and speed of processing. This index is sufficient to disassociate the dyslexic from the non-dyslexic children at this age.

  • Provides a valuable screening tool for deciding whether to request further testing Scores show risk indicators & percentile ranks
  • Profiles strengths and weaknesses, which can be used to guide the development of in-school support for the child.

Recent research has led to the development of early screening and diagnostic tools which can be used to identify very young children (4:6) at risk of reading difficulties. In addition, early methods of intervention have been developed which allow the possibility of preventing the difficulties from ever arising.

The main purpose of these tests is to identify children who are in need of further support. Consequently it is vital to take appropriate action having, administered the test.

The Dyslexia Screener (TDS) is widely used for testing dyslexia for grades 2-9. It is an easily administered, cost effective screening instrument for reading disabilities. It is a direct diagnostic method for specific reading disability based on the principles of the Boder Test of reading/spelling patterns and the Dyslexia Determination Test (DDT). The test has two parts: evaluating the decoding and encoding of words. Testing will distinguish between the three basic types of dyslexia as well as providing a severity index:

Direct diagnostic testing is necessary to determine both the type and severity of dyslexia. (See side column for description of types used in this testing)

* The TDS is designed to separate the normal readers from those in special reading programs with respect to both eidetic and phonetic coding ability

*  Is used to investigate specific aspects of language problems relating to reading, writing and spelling.

*   Is designed to identify and classify specific deficiencies related to decoding and encoding of the written language.

*   Provides a basis for recommendation and application of therapy for individuals having particular patterns of dyslexia.

Motoric Dyslexia is an abnormal amount of letter reversals when writing (doy for boy)

Visual Dyslexia is poor sight-word recognition and inaccurate spelling. The child reads and spells on a phonetic basis rather than with acurate pronunciation & writting (BISNIS vs. BUSINESS)

Auditory Dylsexia is poor word attack skills (phonetic decoding) and transposition of letters when writing, It is the inability to attack words phonetically when trying to read or spell (SOLW vs. SLOW)

Davis Perceptual Ability Assessment can be administered  to see if the person (above 7 years old) can create mental images and move his minds eye. The Davis checklist will be completed for all students with reading delays.

The Dynamic Listening System (DLS)Tomatis, is the first digital signal processing system to be designed for Tomatis-based auditory training. Beautiful Mozart music and soothing Gregorian chant flow from the state-of-the-art DLS equipment through the high quality headphones used by the listener. This increases the capacity to learn by improving how the brain is functioning. If you are at a stand still or plateau with other therapies-ie. ABA, Floortime-You have probably benefited all you can from it until you improve how the brain functions with DLS Tomatis. DLS Tomatis is the most refined and efficient Tomatis based program produced. The results are astounding.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn more about how this music-based sound stimulation can help you or your child expand your capabilities. Listening training may be your key to living life more fully.

Listening programs stimulate the:

  • Auditory system for listening with greater accuracy and focus, tuning out background noise and experiencing less sound sensitivity.
  • Vestibular system for better balance, motor coordination and muscle tone.
  • Brain for improved sensory integration, eye contact, speech, language, thinking, memory and attention span.
  • Emotions for greater motivation, optimism, self-confidence and desire to connect with others.

During an auditory training session, children have fun playing with toys, games, puzzles and crafts such as beading, drawing and painting. (Extra fees are usually needed- Insurance can be billed under speech and language

Educational Foundations of our Neurofeedback System
FYI-
Neurofeedback and EEG Biofeedback are terms that are interchangeable. Regular biofeedback monitors physical symptoms like respiration rates.
Edufeedback is the brand of neurofeedback that we use at Incredible Horizons.

Edufeedback is founded in Cognitive Educational Psychology. To understand how Edufeedback works, it is important to understand how we learn and how distractibility and impulsivity affect the learning process. Edufeedback is the most comprehensive learning tool because it strengthens the core components of the learning process, teaches academic skills, and applies behavioral modification strategies. This patented skill building process is termed Edufeedback.
More About Our Play Attention System

Our system is the only learning system to combine real-time feedback with educational protocols that provide specific skill work necessary to be highly successful during the learning process. It is also the only system with an academic bridge that ensures generalization to learning and life skills. Due to the brain's ability to form new neural pathways during the learning process, impairments such as attention problems can be overcome: or at the very least, managed with correct training. Edufeedback facilitates this reshaping for success in the classroom and life.
