Overview
Incredible
Horizons primary
curriculum is an
individualized PACE program. Our computerized, online, multimedia curriculum and SRA curriculum
is used for special needs and gifted students.

A.C.E. has been
publishing individualized curriculum since 1970. A.C.E. is our primary resource
for curriculum.
Their courses
consist of 12 workbooks called PACE’s. Each PACE presents interesting lessons,
new vocabulary, challenging quizzes, and mastery tests.
The unique format of the curriculum allows
students to advance from unit to unit as they demonstrate mastery. Students move
independently through the curriculum under the supervision of instructors who
provide tutoring at the optimum moment of learning.
Overview
of Switched-On Schoolhouse (SOS)
SOS
computerized curriculum has won numerous awards and is a complete curriculum for
grades 3–12. Multimedia, internal messaging, automatic grading and record
keeping, and immediate feedback are just a few of the features that make it one
of a kind. SOS includes studies in five core subjects – History and Geography,
Language Arts and Spelling and Vocabulary, Math, and Science – and a variety of
electives. SOS provides stimulating multimedia and interactive format infuse the
learning process with plenty of excitement. SOS and its printed version,
LIFEPAC®, are
recommended for our gifted students.
Horizons
(AOP) curriculum uses a concept called spiral learning, a method that
allows students to master concepts through the process of introduction, review,
and
reinforcement. In each lesson, a new concept is introduced, followed by some
activities to practice that concept. In the rest of the lesson, students
practice
previously learned concepts, reinforcing what they've already learned. It's
smooth,
it's fast, and it’s very efficient. Students enjoy making their way through each
colorfully
illustrated lesson in this fairly fast-paced curriculum for elementary students.
Key elements of our success
If you are
new to mastery based curriculum, it is important to know where your student fits
within our curriculum. Our diagnostic tests make student placement relatively
easy. In addition to helping with student placement, these tests also help
in revealing “learning gaps.” Our curriculums require students to demonstrate
successful attainment of objectives before proceeding onward– time honored
mastery learning! Built-in diagnostic and assessment tools guide our staff
through individualizing the curriculum and facilitating mastery for each
student.
Instructor
Involvement
Although
most of the instructional course material is written directly into the lessons,
the teacher continually plays a vital role. Course effectiveness depends on
teacher planning, organization, quality teacher/student interaction, and
evaluation of student progress through the review of student work. Computerized
content delivery combined with automatic grading, record keeping, and lesson
planning reduces teacher tasks so they can spend more quality time with their
students. The teacher will ensure the overall success of the student by
diagnosing readiness and implementing the adjustments needed by their student to
achieve mastery learning.
Identifying special needs and providing adaptations and
specialized curriculum
Our intensive
intervention/prevention curriculums are designed to decrease the gap between
performance and ability at a more rapid rate than direct instruction.
SRA soft script interventions are scientifically researched, and field
tested & are proven to be more effective at preparing a more challenged student
for more independent learning. Adequate and systematic repetition from
spiraling curriculum builds the foundational skills and concepts needed to
succeed and move into a more independent peer group.
Our program also offers unique strategies that can be adjusted to meet the
educational and sensory needs of each individual student.
Our weighted vests, ABA/VBT, sensory interventions,
social skill programs, cognitive training and supplements all work together to
avert the need prescription medication in most cases. Integrating the
technology based educational programs also assists in developing the processing
skills to improve their ability learn and function in their educational setting
and in life.

Social Skill
Enrichment Program- Elementary
Philosophy
We believe that the learning
of social skills is the foundation for social and academic adequacy. It assists
in the prevention of social problems and leads to successful functioning and
survival skills for our children. Social behavior and academic behavior are
highly correlated. The program is offered over a number of sessions in small, structured groups with same-age peers in
a comfortable, fun, and supportive environment. The emphasis is on building
their self-image by providing them with the necessary tools for
self-empowerment. This requires direct and systematic teaching, taking into
consideration each individual chilled social and developmental area of need in
affective, cognitive, and psycho-motor domains. Learning should be sequential,
linked to community goals, and consistent
with behaviors that are relevant to the students needs. Our social skills
curriculum is based on these beliefs.
Studies show that the most important
skills to learn in the beginning of the year are social: cooperation,
self-control, confidence, independence, curiosity, empathy, and
communication. Once these basic social interaction and group behavior
skills are in place, your child will be more ready and able to
concentrate on academics. Our elementary team combines a lot of
resources to do just that. Here are a few.
Teaching Kids to Care & Cooperate:
provides 50 easy writing, discussion & art activities that help develop
self-esteem, responsibility, and respect for others.
Promotes cooperation and communication through easy and fun ideas for
fostering a harmonious classroom community.
How
Does Your Engine Run-Alert
Program for Self-Regulation-Most of us have our own ways
of keeping our minds active and our bodies where they need to be. Yet it
can be hard to understand that our kids may be doing the same things
when they suck their fingers, flap their hands, jump in place, hum
loudly. Keeping your engine running just right -- not so fast you fly
out of control, not so slow you fall asleep -- is a complex task that
requires a great deal of self-understanding and modulation. Teaching
kids with special needs to do it successfully without calling a large
amount of attention to themselves is a complex task, too.
This program consists of lessons and fun activities
that help children learn to recognize, monitor and change their energy
level and ability to attend to a given situation. It’s designed to teach
self-awareness, confidence and self-esteem through learning to notice
one's own level of energy and attention. Sensory-motor techniques and
their applications are taught which allow an individual to self regulate
their own "engine".
KidTips provides learning
strategies for students in grades 3–8. Presents 256 simple study tips to
help them assess what things their brain needs most to help them succeed
in school and life. Improves grades, confidence levels and feelings
about school. All tips are authored and field-tested by students and
organized by area:

Self advocacy
Our social skills enrichment training will then
head toward using a cognitive-behavioral approach. This training utilizes
positive reinforcement along with a number of learning principles to develop
these skills. These principles include the introduction and modeling of skills,
role-playing and direct feedback in order to shape behavior, along with the
promotion of skill maintenance through self-monitoring in programs like these.
Social Standards at School
- focuses on 53 social skills, organized to mesh with
a typical school day: Getting ready, classroom behavior, transitions,
breaks, plus relationships and etiquette. Each skill provides teacher
guidelines and a student self-monitoring page.
REAL-WORLD SOCIAL SKILLS
teaches appropriate social interactions. everyday social situations and
issues that students encounter in school and at home. This curriculum
includes lessons, interactive group and partner activities, role-plays, and
reproducible activity sheets that help students learn positive behaviors.
Some
common and essential skills include the following:
-Friendship Making
-Understanding and Expressing Emotions (one's own and those of others)
- Increasing Attention and Listening
- Accepting Responsibility
- Developing Assertiveness and Self-Concept
- Learning Effective Problem-Solving Strategies
- Working Cooperatively
- Dealing with Teasing, Bullying and Victimization
By the end of the year we will have developed:
Self Esteem
-
this can be a big issue for special
needs kids, and can be the source for behavioral problems.
Effective Communication skills
- these skills can be used for a number of
things in every day life from defusing anger and stress to negotiating positive
terms with teachers and parents.
Conflict Management
- this will show us how to deal with conflict and positively resolve it
Anger Management
- this important skill will help us keep the anger sharks at bay.
Characteristics of children that
need social skill groups
-
Boundary issues:
Constant getting into other’s space, touching or just not realizing they are
too close to someone.
-
Impulsive: Blurting things in class or around peers and
their peers do not associate with them for fear of getting in trouble or
because they think they are not cool
-
Bossy: Often natural born leaders that do not know how to
lead and only go by the examples they see at home or school. Sometimes, a
kid that needs control because things may be out of control somewhere else
like home.
-
Caretakers: Kids that are tender hearted and want to help
but often do so without the consent of their peers.
-
Withdrawn: Possibly anxious or depressed kids that lack
confidence or assertion to speak up. They may not feel safe to speak up, as
they fear negative feedback from their peers.
-
Mean Kids or Bullies:
Often they act out issues that may be out of control at home and try to take
control at school. Often they have trouble with their own insecurities and
knock others down before someone does it to them. They also can lack
empathy.
Jr. & High School Life Skills and Career
Programs
Pursuing
the most favorable option-Our Director has been
trained to assess the student’s vocational interest and abilities and compare
that to vocational options that are recommended for clients with particular
personality traits. We support the recent career research demonstrating that
there has been a gap in traditional vocational tracking when guidance staff has
not considered personality traits as part of the assessment procedure.
Therefore, the assessment will match your interest, personality strengths, and
your abilities to make vocational recommendations.
As
a student at Incredible Horizons Academy, you will have the opportunity to test
your vocational choice while in school. Sr. High students can be assisted in
designing your own vocational internship for credit. Community services or
services to other students will also be recognized with credit. Through helping
others one often learns about oneself and what direction you may want to pursue
vocationally. It is also found to be rewarding and encouraging to see how anyone
can effectively change another’s life by volunteering services others in need.
As a part
of your vocational/ life skills preparation we will provide a vocational
assessment as well as instruction on the following:
- How
to define your interests and assess your skills
- How
to present your self on paper and in an interview
- How
to communicate effectively
- How
to effectively manage time and problem solve
- How
to network or use internet services to find a internship opportunity
- How
to improve your self awareness and social interactions
- How to become the
well rounded student that colleges demand
We will do
that through three programs:
Creating Careers with Confidence
A course designed to assist the
student through a personal occupational skill assessment in order to effectively
guide the students in career exploration and planning. The focus is on
developing a positive self-image, assessing competitiveness and strengths,
discovering career expectations, as well as, learning job search techniques in
the lessons on developing writing skills and resume preparations. Students learn
how to present themselves in order to cross the threshold into occupational fields that they will feel
confident and competent in. This class is crucial because if they do not learn
who they are, they will never learn to use their most powerful assets.
Becoming a Master Student
Building character, ethics, and academic skills, in order to
better prepare students for college and adult life. Learning where you stand on
the Discovery Wheel through discussion, and application, this course is designed
to promote proper study habits and skills, which should enable the student to
compete successfully in the higher education environment. Students learn how to
use “who they are” as leverage in a career and in the educational environment.
Creative Writing
This course offers hands on
instruction in grammar usage and mechanics, as well as, providing an overview of
the writing process and strategies for effective writing. The purpose of this
course is to develop writing and language skills needed for individual
expression. The text is designed to improve research skills such as using the
dictionary, using the library, and documenting sources in a research paper. This
course also provides instruction and practice in expository writing and
emphasizes grammatical and mechanical accuracy and proper essay form. Emphasis
is placed on clarity, and coherence of central idea and supporting material.
This class effectively prepares students with
excellent communication skills that are critical in today’s fast-changing
professional and educational settings.
This is a tri-focus core curriculum only offered at
Incredible Horizons Academy; please do not let your child miss this awesome
opportunity to prepare fully for college and adult life.
