PECS PRODUCTS & SOFTWARE
Our software is often used to create personalized
PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) PECS begins with
teaching a student to exchange a picture of a desired item with a
teacher, who immediately honors the request. The
system goes on to teach discrimination of symbols and then puts them all
together in simple "sentences." Children are also taught to comment and
answer direct questions. Many preschoolers using PECS also begin
developing speech. The system has been successful with adolescents and
adults who have a wide array of communicative, cognitive and physical
difficulties.
Using
pictures is an excellent way to teach speech, language and
communication. Children with Autism are highly visual and can be taught
almost anything using images. You need thousands of good photographic
pictures to help with 'generalization' i.e. if a child with Autism has
just one picture of a white dog and is taught this is a dog, he may not
easily recognize a German Shepherd when he sees it. Using new and varied
material also keeps a child from getting bored and frustrated.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was developed 12 years
ago as a unique augmentative/ alternative training package that allows
children and adults with autism and other communication deficits to
initiate communication. PECS does not require complex or
expensive materials. It was created with educators, residential care
providers and families in mind, and so it is readily used in a variety
of settings.
It is thought that we should
minimize the number of stick images or drawings used. Actual color
photographic material is the best as the images are more life-like and
much easier for the child to relate to.
Our software contains the photographic images for your PEC's style
communication needs. The following info provides links to pages on
purchasing or creating your own products.
This is better than teaching sign language because not everyone
understands sign language. PECS allow your child to communicate with
anyone.

Interactive Software
Many children, particularly those with autism, are fascinated by the
computer. Often, however, off-the-shelf educational programs that may
work well for the typical child are too distracting or overwhelming for
a special needs student. Our Great Action Adventure program is designed
to be distraction-free and fully customizable. You can control which
photos and videos appear, which sounds and videos play, and how quickly
the program advances. Each word is systematically introduced and tested
using a discrete trial method of teaching (often called ABA or DTT).
The Great Action
Adventure teaches the following skills:
- Receptive Verbs and Nouns
- Early Reading
- Sign Language
- Verb Tenses

Early Education
Although our software was originally designed to help autistic
individuals, Montessori teachers and early educators have discovered
that they can easily create photo flash cards, bingo games, and early
reading games with our Picture This... software. The Great Action
Adventure software is also a hit with young children. Older children
enjoy learning sign language with The Great Action program.
The sample animated gif files shown below are rough approximations of
the videos that come with the Great Action Adventure. The videos on the
CD are much larger .mov files with sound effects and spoken words.
ESL and Foreign Languages
Because our Picture This... Pro software comes in 5 languages, you
can create your own custom cards with a picture and English word on one
side and a foreign language on the back. You can add your own language
or search the huge database of photos in the foreign language. Picture
This... also works great for practicing a foreign language before
traveling overseas.
