Auditory Processing Difficulties Checklist

The following are human functions, which are related to auditory processing. It is common that having even a few of these difficulties can cause great concern. There is no score, simply check as many boxes as you feel appropriate. Using The Listening Program^® can help in each of these areas:

Developmental history
This knowledge is extremely important in early identification and prevention of listening problems. It also sheds light on the possible causes.
__ a stressful pregnancy

Receptive listening
This is the listening that is directed outward. It keeps us attuned to the world around us, to what is going on at home, at work, or in the classroom.

__ frequent need for repetition
__ inability to follow sequential instructions

Expressive listening
This is the listening that is directed within. We use it to control our voice when we speak and sing.

__ inability to sing in tune and in general musical ability
__ confusion or reversal of letters

The ear of the body (the vestibule), which controls balance, coordination, and body image, also needs close attention.

Dyslexia is a language disability, not a reading disability, so not only does it affect the ability to learn to read, write, and spell by conventional methods, it affects the ability to communicate in more subtle ways. Dyslexics have processing, perceptual, and attention/concentration problems. Dyslexic people think primarily in pictures, not words, and have difficulty learning to work with symbols such as letters or numerals. When they are confused or frustrated as children, they begin to experience distorted perceptions, such as reversals of letters, and develop life-long learning blocks that hamper their progress.
