Beyond the exquisite
orchestrations recorded exclusively for The Listening Program are years of
research and collaboration among therapists, physicians, neurodevelopment
specialists, musicians and audio engineers at ABT-
Advanced Brain Technologies®.
Stepping behind the scenes into the
production of The Listening Program (TLP) music lends a better understanding as
to why the program is effective in helping individuals progress intellectually,
socially, emotionally and physically.
TLP Music Preparation
and Production
For each TLP recording, professional musicians from around the world form the
Arcangelos Chamber
Ensemble.
These players are chosen for their technical merit, expressive qualities, and
genuine interest in creating music to maximize human potential.
Carefully selected compositions are arranged
to complement psychoacoustic effects, including varied orchestration, tempo,
octave, meter and simplification of lines.
But the work doesn’t stop there. Extensive
post-production processes leverage psychoacoustic techniques to enhance the
natural attributes inherent within the musical structure. These processes
include filtration, audio bursting, blending, spatial dynamics, audio morphing
and more.
The result is TLP music’s meticulous
preparation. The program provides a quality of music and auditory stimulation
that is not only proven – it is unparalleled.

Extending the Power of Music
through Psychoacoustic Treatments
So the question becomes...how can we overcome auditory processing
challenges—moving from a “disorganized” to an “organized” system?
Certain classical music, like that of Mozart, Haydn and Vivaldi, has
specific structure, producing sound
waves
in organized patterns. Within these patterns are vital elements
including time, frequency and volume. When listening to music, the ear
is receiving the musical sound waves—waves that arrive in different
frequencies, measured in Hertz (Hz). These frequencies stimulate the
brain, and thus affect different functions of the mind and body.
The Listening Program’s psychoacoustically modified music and
patent-pending production techniques are designed to stimulate, or
“exercise,” the different functions of the auditory processing system.
This enables the brain to better receive, process, store and utilize the
valuable information provided through the varied soundscapes in our
lives such as music, language and the environment in which we live.
Specific Frequencies for Specific Functions
The Listening Program combines decades of clinical research in several
fields, including neurology, physiology, psychoacoustics, auditory
processing, music theory and more. The method builds on the work of
respected leaders in these fields, such as ear, nose and throat (ENT)
physician Alfred A. Tomatis, M.D. (1920-2001). Among other discoveries,
Dr. Tomatis helped identify the relationship between certain sound
frequencies and their effect on functions of the mind and body. A
simplified explanation of Dr. Tomatis’ findings shows that certain
bands, or zones, of sound frequencies affect different abilities:
|
|
| |
Zone One
Sensory Integration
(lower frequency
sounds) |
• Balance
• Rhythm
• Coordination
• Muscle Tone |
• Sense of
Direction
• Laterality
• Right/Left Discrimination
• Body Awareness |
|
| |
Zone Two
Speech and Language
(mid and higher frequency sounds) |
• Memory
• Concentration
• Attention |
• Speech
• Language
• Vocal Control |
|
| |
Zone Three
High Spectrum
(higher frequency
sounds) |
• Energy
• Intuition
• Ideas
• Ideals |
• Spirituality
• Creativity
• Auditory Cohesion
|
|
|
TLP is designed to address these
zones, systematically providing auditory stimulation that, when
customized for listeners by TLP Providers, can help improve their
ability to function in a number of ways.
|
|
| |
Sensory
Integration - Targets the first
zone (lower frequencies) to stimulate functions
such as balance, coordination, motor skills and
more. |
|
| |
Full Spectrum
- Provides a kind of overall
“organizing” experience. |
|
| |
Speech &
Language - Emphasizes the mid to
higher frequencies to stimulate the brain's
abilities for memory, attention, vocal control
and more. |
| |
High Spectrum
- Focuses on the higher
frequencies that impact creativity, intuition,
energy and more. |

What is
Bone Conduction?
The Listening Program Bone Conduction System (TLP
BCS) is a new and exciting delivery system for Music-Based Auditory
Stimulation made available exclusively to TLP Certified Providers. Bone
conduction is essentially an added form of stimulation to the cochlea
and vestibular system and is more intensive than air conduction alone.
The increased input is observed to accelerate change.
We listen to ourselves through bone conduction and
others through the air. If you have ever listened to a recording of
your own voice you have experienced this phenomenon.
As we speak our entire body resonates due in part
to the speed in which sound travels through bone. Our self perception
through speech is primarily through the influence of the bone conduction
pathway. This is quite different from how we listen to others whose
voices are transmitted through the air.
Further evidence to the significance of bone
conduction is demonstrated through its role in hearing and listening
assessment. Audiologists test bone conduction perception in relation to
air conduction as an important diagnostic tool for certain hearing
problems as did Dr Alfred Tomatis in assessing listening function.
How Bone Conduction Works
The inner ear is encased within the temporal bone
which resonates when stimulated by sound, providing direct stimulation
to the cochlea and vestibular system. The bone conduction pathway is
most efficient in transmitting the large vibrations produced by low
frequency sounds. This makes a TLP BCS program of particular value for
clients with problems integrating functions such as: body image, self
regulation, time and spatial issues, motor skills and the rhythm of body
and language.
Further, problems may be addressed relating to the
functioning of the middle ear as observed through: anxiety,
hypersensitivity to sound, listening discrimination, filtering out
background sound and poor vocal control.
The TLP BCS delivers auditory stimulation through
headphones with standard air conduction to the left and right ear. In
addition, more amplified sound is delivered to the skull through a tiny
bone conductor, or speaker, which rests on top of the skull within the
headband. By applying auditory stimulation directly to the skull, the
inner ear receives rapid stimulation by-passing the middle ear, prior to
receiving it through the air conduction route. This experience is
subtle and very grounding. The body is prepared and seems more ready to
receive auditory input. This appears to be of particular benefit to
those who present as being disconnected from, or resistant to, sound
such as people on the autism spectrum. It is amazing how clearly you
can listen to the music through bone conduction only. People are
fascinated when they first experience it!

vestibular system and is more intensive than air conduction alone. The
increased in put is observed to accelerate change.
